If there ever was a lesson learned by me, it was during a two-year stint where I thought I could eat anything I wanted while I was exercising. I was getting up at 5 in the morning and walking 3-four miles every other day. Then on the days in between, I was lifting weights. I then got to the point that I wasn't losing weight anymore and so I decided to up the ante and instead of walking, I started doing some CrossFit exercises with a buddy of mine. I noticed some slight and slow improvement and then I seemed to plateau again. I couldn't understand what was going on. I was eating like I always did. I had been eating that way ever since I was a teenager with a great metabolism and I was playing sports all year round...

I finally broke down and asked for directions, so to speak. You know how hard it is for men to do. It's like my dad used to say to me: "When all else fails, read the instructions.". Now, I would hear that when I was assembling some new IKEA furniture and I didn't know what to do next. He doesn't shop there so he's got no clue how strange the directions can be for a coffee table. Anyway, I could hear his voice chiding me and so I talked to my doctor about what was happening. I basically was told that I was eating improperly. I couldn't believe it could be something that simple.
Eating Right
I took my doctor's advice and started limiting my saturated fats, sugars, and sodium. I also stopped eating about 3-4 hours before I went to bed. There were definitely some times where there was a midnight snack or two. I continued my regimen of cardio and weights and after about 4 weeks, I started getting the normal weight loss questions at work. Have you been working out? Have you lost weight? Looking good! What have you been doing?
I never really cared if people noticed or not since I judged my success, not by the scale or amount of compliments, but by how my clothes fit. It felt good to buy a size of jeans that were the same as I wore in high school. It is probably common sense to anyone but me that my diet was holding me back, but if you are taking in 3200 calories and only burning 3300 a day, then the stagnation will take hold and you won't see results.
