Weight Training and Cardio in Harmony
Weight Training and Cardio in Harmony
The great debate: Cardio vs. Weight Traning. It's an almost age old debate that I have heard argued my whole life. While the advent of the CrossFit boom has brought about a whole new group of people into the idea that weights can be used in conjunction with cardio to create the ultimate workout, I am talking more about doing your lifting and cardio separately.
At what I would consider the peak of my health, I was lifting every other day and doing cardio on the in between days. I saw the fat melt right off my body and, while this may not work for everyone, I would recommend it because of the results I saw for myself. I would isolate specific muscle groups one day of the week. For instance, chest and biceps on Monday, back and triceps on Wednesday, shoulders on Friday, and legs on Sunday. On my cardio days, I would do burpees, bear crawl, tire flips, ropes and other plyometric exercises combined with jogging. I have always been a bigger guy that hovers anywhere between 350 and 270 lbs. so sprinting has never been my strong suit.
As life does, there always seemed to be one thing or another that would distract me from doing my workout or give me a reason I felt like justified missing one. In the end, one day missed became two and so on until I quit working out. It was that way until I found out that I am kind of a morning person and so I needed to get up and do my workout first thing This helped me because the only excuse I could ever find to not do a workout was that I was tired. I had a great buddy helping me stay accountable and so this excuse was never really used unless I was legit sick or something.
It just seemed to me, and I know this is simply my opinion, but a balance of cardio and weights gave me the best shape of my life.
