Negativity and it's affect on Workouts

Negativity can have an impact on lots of things that we don't really want it to have an affect on. You can be having a great day and then next thing you know, the office curmudgeon comes in and your mood is taking a downward spiral. Most of the time, you can avoid people who tend to lower your positivity, but its just not possible one hundred percent of the time.

Does Negativity Affect Performance?

I am not a psychologist or any other type of person who studies human behavior, but I have experienced a few things while working out that tend to make me think a person's state of mind does have at least some bearing on the body's ability to function at its full potential.

Counting Reps

I've pretty much given up on counting reps while I lift. You may think this is a bunch of hogwash but I just don't care to count them anymore when I lift. To me, and this is only my opinion, counting reps sends a signal to your muscles when you get to the end of your sets that they are tired. You may have much more left in you, but muscle memory is telling you it's time to be tired and stop. I went back to counting after doing reps till failure, and I noticed that I would get tired faster than when I would have my spotter count how many I did.

I felt like going until failure without counting would get my full potential to show. When I gave up counting reps, I got stronger and could work out longer. This may be attributed to the idea I have that its inherently negative to your mind to have a set number that you just need to muscle through instead of trying to reach new potential.

Weight Thresholds

When I was in High School, one of the benchmarks of the football team was to have a max bench press lift of 300 pounds or more. I never could, for the life of me get that while I was in high school. I was perpetually stuck at 285 lbs on my max. After high school, I continued to lift for fun and fitness and still only ever got 295. Something about the number 300 just felt unreachable for me. One day, when we were maxing out, my friend accidentally miscalculated the weight. While this is a dangerous thing to do, it was totally innocent on his part and I ended up benching 305. From that moment on, I knew that negative thinking had created a metal road block that my body couldn't pass. Now to trick myself into 385...
